Y with diaeresis is exceedingly rare; it appears in a few proper
names.  AE ligature appears in a few Latinate terms, e.g. cæcum.
I agree that you won't encounter these in an introductory French
course, but had I left them out, some other nitpicker would now
complain about their omission.
