I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with Rust's internals to offer any
meaningful feedback on this patch. It seems you and John have a good discussion
going, though.

However, what I can comment on is that I'd like to see the RUSTC_BOOTSTRAP=1
hack be better documented in the Makefile itself (i.e. why is it needed?), and
not just be mentioned in passing in the PR.
