Can't escape to loader prompt

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for and I'm sure wasn't
the most intelligent thing to do but when I found myself in this same
position I installed a copy of 5.2.1 and cvsuped to 5.3-RELEASE.
Definately a PITA.
