Error using sound with KDE

I had the same problem on a Linux and a FreeBSD machine a while back. 
Try opening the arts controller under multimedia. It will show several 
(20+) volume bars (General, CD, Phone, etc.). How I fixed this is, I 
played a CD in KsCD(?) so I could watch the track count and started to 
move each bar up till I heard sound. On my system it was 
ISO2000something?. Try that and see if it works. If KDE had sound at 
startup but not latter it is most like with the volume selection as 
described.
