gtk2+ compatibility in gnome 2.5

All,

I just got gnome 2.5 installed, using the latest ports from marcuscom (and
the marcusmerge script.)  Gnome seems to be working great so far, but I am
having trouble with some applications.  A running theme, with gaim,
thunderbird, etc., is that they are looking for an older version of the
gtk2+ libs than what is currently installed (2.3.1).  Is there any way to
both have gnome 2.5 and still maintain gtk2+ compatibility for those
programs?  Any help appreciated.
