Daemons in unix are equivalent to Windows NT-style services and refer to
programs that run constantly in the background and perform operations
automatically at specified times or when triggered by specified events.
Daemon/demon originates in the Greek daimon="a god, genius, spirit" from
the same root as daiomai, I impart. Any reference to the word or to the
image of a horned red devil as the foe of God have no basis in Christian
doctrine that I am aware of. Although the BSD-logo makes a playful jest
by combining the computer definition with popular imagery it has no
religious significance whatsoever.
Cheers,
