Today the snapshot FreeBSD 12.0-CURRENT (BEAGLEBONE) #0 r314972 came up on the FreeBSD ftp server. I installed this new one, and with that everything is working perfectly, including booting from the internal flash and enumeration of a SD card which has been inserted into the slot after the system was booted.
Many thanks to everybody for all your efforts.
Best regards
Rolf
