I don't like using hardware compression, it's too unpredictable. It
doesn't compress too well (compared to gzip, for example), and often
actually results in significant increase in size when backing up
already compressed data. In any event, it does not allow the backup
software to predict end-of-tape reliably and makes it difficult to
estimate how much will actually fit on a tape.

Hmm. That's cheaper than I expected (DLT), I guess I haven't been
paying enough attention lately. I need to reconsider our backup
media, it seems. DDS-4 DAT drives are also available now, but 20 GB is
not a huge improvement over 12.
