I'm one of these [fill in appropriate adjective] guys that uses a native
FreeBSD workstation and my partner uses Mac. My experience is that using
xterm with tcsh I can ssh into the Mac and pretty much do anything I need
to do with my userid on the Mac. On the Mac the file system names are case
sensitive with liberal use of blanks. In my experience I have seen no
difference between Mac tar and FreeBSD.

The mail thing sorta sounded like that was in mbox format, I did not see if 
that was mentioned. imapsync will move email in any format from machine to 
machine. Large volumes across the internet will take a while.
