You needn't do a time adjustment in your BIOS to make ntpd "work". ntpd was
working from the moment it started on your system. However it adjusts time
slowly to avoid upsetting applications, like database apps. Of course not
everyone runs time sensitive apps on their systems. Thus you can force ntpd to
make a large time adjustment when it starts, like ntpdate does, by putting
ntpd_sync_on_start="YES" into your rc.conf.
