However it adjusts time slowly to avoid upsetting applications, like database apps. Of course not everyone runs time sensitive apps on their systems. Thus you can force ntpd= to make a large time adjustment when it starts, like ntpdate does, by putting ntpd_sync_on_start=3D"YES" into your rc.conf.
