The documentation was removed a couple of weeks ago. The actual need
for -pthread has been gone for months or years (I don't know exactly
when the last release of FreeBSD the required it expired, somebody else
surely does though).
Does it matter when the documentation was removed? Doing the right
thing has the most importance.
