Can databases/zodb3 be updated?

I don't know anything about zope, but I have someone at work who has an
internal project that is looking to leverage ZODB and they're testing
with 5.x. Our port is still at 3.x. I don't know what this update would
break if I was to commit it, but this port has been stale since like
2011.

Anyone here have insight?
