extreme window open delay, missing menu highlight

Nothing there apart from what gtk2 installed, I think.

However, meanwhile I was able to get an actual error message on the long
startup delay I described earlier. It reads

No idea who is waiting for what here, and why. Google doesn't come up with
anything useful, either. Any ideas?
