Desktop backgrounds/xfdesktop

Thanks for the latest updates.  No problems with them except that the 
desktop background settings were ignored, regardless of setting.  On my 
system, it just showed the striped background with the xfce logo.

By messing around with it, I somehow broke my entire xfdesktop, and now 
there is just a gray background with no desktop icons, and the logout 
button does not log out.  The panel works, and keyboard shortcuts and 
everything else.

This problem seems familiar, but I can't recall how to fix it.  Killing 
xfdesktop or xfce4-session does not do it, and the logout button has a 
long delay before eventually working.  Suggestions welcome.
