In /etc/screenrc, it says xterm doesn't support hardstatus.
So, in my .screenrc, I added:
termcapinfo xterm 'hs:ts=\E]2;:fs=\007:ds=\E]2;screen\007'
To use the terminal window title as hardstatus.
I borrowed the line from /etc/screenrc on an xubuntu system.
