I figured it out (using FuryBSD) and documented the solution here:

As it turns out, neither the drm-kmod nor its legacy counterpart work, but
instead some obscure x86(possible incorrect spelling) driver option FuryBSD
gives you the option of automatically setting up.

Thanks for your input. Looks like I'll be staying with FreeBSD for a bit longer
at the least ;)
