The best way to do this is to follow freebsd-current@ and freebsd-x11@
mailing-lists and watch for any "Call for testers", as well as running
HEAD on your workstation. HEAD is quite stable most of the time with
some bumps on the road :)

About kernel development, if you already program with the C language,
you'll notice that it's not that hard. Of course, you need to cope with
some constraints and sometimes more complicated debugging phases. But
don't overestimate the required level.
