Yes, when synaptics_support is disabled, we can't distinguish a physical
button from a tap. The only information received from the hardware is an
event saying "the user clicked using button #1" (ie. left button).

I don't think so, because the hardware is not configurable in this mode.
From X.Org PoV, you could remap button #1 (left button) or button #3
(right button), but no matter what, the physical left button and the tap
share the same number, #1.
