xfree86 broken on bsd : error code 1

hello,


I installed freebsd 6.2 by burning the 2 iso images from the site and  
installing them. After the install he wont start gnome. startx fails.

then I tried to install gnome. I followed the instructions on FAQ 6.  
(http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q6).

the installation fails after a couple of hours while i'm running the  
"make install clean" command. XFree86 appears to be broken. So I  
tried to install it with pkg_add ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ 
ports/i386/packages-6.2-release/Latest/XFree86-aoutlibs.tbz.

This he won't do because there are no a.out libraries.

any suggestions?
