>Description:
on the support page we list user groups by continent, sorted by city name.
this is not good, best example is europe. first entry is aachen, then austria,
all german groups are spread through the whole country list, which makes
searching for all german groups difficult. we should sort per country and then per city.
same for america. i also fixed some sgml issues and tried to get a common identation for the source.

Subject: fixit
Message-ID: <20040104173325.R21865@rocket.alienwebshop.com>
Hello everyone.
[1] What is the best resource online for understanding how to use "fixit"??
I have a bootable FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE CD-R and I can start an emergency
"fixit" shell on vtty4 (you start it after booting into sysinstall "...using
the live filesystem CD..." and type Alt-F4 to get to a # prompt).
I am able to do an "ls" only by typing "echo *" -- "cd" works and "pwd"
works, but "which", "mkdir", "mount" and "more" do NOT WORK.
[2] (a) My question is, with all of the data that can be fit on an ISO9660
filesystem, why was "fixit" and the array of tools so limited?!
(b) http://www.freebsd.org/relnotes/CURRENT/installation/i386/trouble.html
only makes a passing reference to fixit.flp only. Is there a tutorial at
freebsd.org that explains use of the fixit shell??
[3] What sequence of commands do I use to mount to a UFS floppy or UFS
filesystem on my hard drive (and do I have to know which /dev/ and do I
have to fdisk and label mountpoints in sysinstall ahead of time??)??!
If anyone can clarify these three questions, I would forever be grateful.
Thank you kindly.

I agree, so I have removed the link, it should be gone from the web site
within 24 hours.

The live filesystem is on the second cd (disc2). Without this or
alternatively the fixit floppy, you'll find the environment very
limited indeed.

Dear FreeBSD (User Groups Support Section)
Hello I'm Daniel Lewis, I'm currently setting up a Unix User Group for
Oxford Brookes University (UK) Students, under the name OBAOSS (Oxford
Brookes Alternative Operating System Society). The society will provide
a website and services for Unix, Mac, Linux and other alternative
operating systems (i.e. not windows).
I am the President/Owner/Manager/Administrator/Coordinator for the Group
at the moment, and we are in the development stage, I currently have
quite a few interested students, and hope to be up and running fully by
the new year. I am a student myself (first year BSc(Hons) Software
Engineering Student.)
Our website will be on
http://members.lycos.co.uk/obaoss/
But I have registed on lug.org.uk for obaoss.lug.org.uk, and should be
up and running by the new year. I will notify you of any changes. Any
help that you/FreeBSD can give me would be a great help.
Thank you,

Hi guys,
As Brett has noted, I've largely moved on in terms of my day-to-day
FreeBSD responsibilities, the regrettable side-effect of a significant
workload at Apple and simply way too many interesting initiatives to
get involved with as it is. That said, I think that providing the
Urchin stats at (and of) FreeBSD.org is still a useful thing to do
since, as Brett also notes, it provides statistics in a rather nice,
easy-to-read form that many comparative packages lack. I don't know
who currently runs "the web site" or wears the administrative hat(s) at
www@freebsd.org, but if you guys can work out something with Brett, it
certainly seems like a relationship that could and should continue!
Regards,
- Jordan

I'm not sure who this should be tossed at since the general site
maintainers are the doc/www committers.
Although I think admins@ would be responsible for maintaining it.
I'll just forward this entire thing over to doceng@ and let
them deal with it directly. That's what the're here for
anyway. :)
Thanks, and my apologies to Brett and Scott for tossing this
around.

I assume that you can use FTP, just type
# pkg_add -r opera
or fetch tar+gzip'ed ports/ tree from
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/ports/ports.tar.gz
However, you can get more proper or informative answer from
the FreeBSD Questions mailing list .
Hope this helps,

No problem guys, just let me know if you are interested and we can
get you a copy of Urchin 5 for the site.
Jordan, congratulations on all the great stuff going on at Apple.
We've been working with the Xserve group and were happy to see the G5
Xserve come out. We guessed and did a press release about our G5
optimized version of Urchin before the keynote:

When updating from to httpd 2.0.48_2 mod_auth_external failed working. I tried around a bit and found out that only the method 'checkpassword' (not pipe/environment) are affected. When I did not find any way to get it working I downgraded back to 2.0.48_1 and it worked as usual.

I do only have one machine running FreeBSD so I do not know if this problem always occurs, but I did nothing else than upgrading to httpd_2.0.48_2.

While http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi already knows about FreeBSD's 5.2
release, the entry for -current is still called `5.1-current' and should be
changed to `5.2-current'. The same update should happen for `5.1-RELEASE and
Ports' too, I guess.

Hi,
The release notes for 5.2-RELEASE/i386 have an error:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Port description for security/cfg
The port specified does not exist, or has an invalid name:
ports/security/cfg/pkg-descr
You are coming from
http://www%2efreebsd%2eorg/releases/5%2e2R/relnotes%2di386%2ehtml.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The page in readable html:
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.2R/relnotes-i386.html
section "2.2.6 File Systems", the third "item".
I unfortunately don't know how to fix this, but hopefully the
author(s) do.
Regards,
Steinar B?rmer

Subject: [headsup] update of publications page
Message-ID: <20040116170720.GA1142@jenny.daemon.li>
hi!
I would like to commit my chances to the rotting publications
page on the website (http://www.freebsd.org/publish.html).
I removed all outdated entries and updated the books.
I ordered them by language and rewrote the whole page
with xml/xslt to make maintaing of the content a
trivial task.
If anyone has any additions(i am looking for local books, non-english
ones) comments or objections, feel free to make them now.
Review my work at: http://www.daemon.li/freebsd/
greets, josef

It's just the Books part, right? not the complete FreeBSD related
publications page?
Why not keeping old books cause even if they are not printed anymore,
one can still find them as second hand, and I see old book covers in the
same way I see old FreeBSD CDROMS pictures...
The list of book should be sorted (the 1st book is far to be the best
book:)). I also miss a "language toc".

yes, i thought it does not really make sense to keep the cds
and magazines, at least on the frontpage. if you think
i should add bsd magazines then i will, although i am not
aware of a pure bsd magazine (daemonnews seems to be dead,
at least the printed version).

What about sorting it following english alphabet?

About the books, we must keep track of them for many reasons:
- A book is not like a newspaper, it's an "useful tool", even if it's
outdated/out of print, there is always an interesting thing inside...
A book is something you keep.
- It's still possible to find old books ("second hand" shops, etc.)
- When you run old version of FreeBSD (many people still run 2.2.8 for
example) and old book can be useful.
- When you do not speak english well and if an old book in your
language existed, it can be interesting to know it...
- It's also FreeBSD history, if FreeBSD.org does not keep track of them
who will do it? and in the case we don't do it, so why keeping 2001
news archives for example?
- etc.
About the CD covers, well it's FreeBSD history as well, maybe some
people would like to see cover of FreeBSD 2.0 CDROM for example

Yes, it's what I meant; don't forget if you put unsorted lists of thing
people would think the 1st one is the "supported" one.

okay i see your arguments and i will import the old books too.

i think it would be best to split the pages into book - cdroms - magazines
to get a cleaner result. The current way, everything included on a single
page is a bit messy.
i will rework my stuff and show you the result then.

'BSD Magazine' and 'FreeBSD Press' seem to be the most successful
(Japanese). They've been mentioned before in relation to this
reorganization. There were others in the past and may still be others
in different languages, but those are the ones that frequently have
interviews with FreeBSD committers and relevant topical information
about FreeBSD.
- Murray
There were others (Japanese) and maybe some in other countries as wel.

I can just change it without description, but since the entry is being

There are broken (old) links to Russian and Brazilian Portuguese FreeBSD FAQs.
>How-To-Repeat:
Go to http://www.freebsd.org/support.html#web and find "Russian, FAQ" line. These words are two links. Go to the "FAQ" link. It points to the http://www.freebsd.org/ru/FAQ/FAQ.html URL. But you'll be redirected from this URL to the http://www.freebsd.org/ru/FAQ/FAQ.html one.
Go back to the http://www.freebsd.org/support.html#web and find "Brazilian Portuguese FAQ" line. This line is one single link. Go to this link. It points to the http://www.freebsd.org/pt_BR/FAQ/FAQ.html URL. But you'll be redirected from this URL to the http://www.freebsd.org/pt_BR/doc/pt_BR.ISO8859-1/books/faq/index.html one. This time the redirection is broken too.
>Fix:
Change the http://www.freebsd.org/ru/FAQ/FAQ.html URL of the "FAQ" link to one of following two:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/ru_RU.KOI8-R/books/faq/
or
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/ru_RU.KOI8-R/books/faq/index.html
Change the http://www.freebsd.org/pt_BR/FAQ/FAQ.html URL of the "Brazilian Portuguese FAQ" link to one of following two:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/pt_BR.ISO8859-1/books/faq/
or
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/pt_BR.ISO8859-1/books/faq/index.html
Change the broken redirection from the old "Brazilian Portuguese FAQ" link to the right new one.
P.S. There is "Several other non-English resource exists" line. Is it grammatically correct? I mean, shouldn't it be changed to "Several other non-English resources exist"?

Subject: RFC: rework of the main web site's "internal" page
Message-ID:
Now that everyone's back from the new year, let's see if we
can try to pick up this idea again.
The general change that I'm suggesting is to rearrange the
page on http://www.FreeBSD.org/internal to make it less
ugly and more logically organized. There are two parts to
this: 1) fixing that page itself (including removing
redundant information that is on other pages already), and
2) attempting to split up the next-level "Resources For
Developer's" page into "technical resources" versus
"policies". The former is probably a better success than
the latter at this point, but it's a start at trying to
avoid introducing too many new concepts to fresh volunteers.
(Why list the machine resources and commit bit policies
before even talking about their responsibilities?)
I've incorporated feedback from Ken Smith in terms of
getting rid of contractions.
The prototype pages can be loaded from
http://www.lonesome.com/FreeBSD_www/en/internal/internal.html
and going from there. In that directory, you can also find
http://www.lonesome.com/FreeBSD_www/en/internal/diff.out.
There you'll be able to see that there is not much new
text, that's it mostly a rearrangement and style update.
In some cases a little bit of text has been added to make
it less "dry".
I'm not really too attached to any of the specifics in
the proposal (except one) but I already think it's better
than what we have. The one specific? That's those huge
blue links in the original; those just have to go :-)

>Description:
Neither the FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE nor 5.2-RELEASE i386 Hardware Notes
mention the minimum amount of RAM necessary to install FreeBSD
using the -RELEASE images and I cannot find this information in
any other obvious place starting at www.freebsd.org. It would
be useful to include a link to the installation instructions
from the "Current releases" section of
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/index.html
The head of
src/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/installation/common/install.sgml
states under "Hardware Requirements" (section 1.2) that a
minimum of 5MB RAM is necessary to install FreeBSD in an i386
and 4MB to run it. My understanding is that sysinstall requires
needs at least 16MB RAM (this is documented in install.sgml
for 4.x).
Both the installation notes and hardware notes for -current
state that FreeBSD will run on an 80386 or better. This is
not true for the GENERIC install images which require an
80486 or better. Running FreeBSD 5-CURRENT on an 80386 requires
compiling a custom kernel.
In addition, running any version of 5.x requires hardware FPU
support by default. This means it is not possible to install
on an 80386 without an 80387 or 80486SX without 80487
(MATH_EMULATE was removed from GENERIC in 1.324 on
2001.10.20). Early versions of 5.x could be re-compiled to
use an FPU emulator but this was removed prior to 5.2-RELEASE
([GPL_]MATH_EMULATE was removed from NOTES in 1.1091 on
2003.07.22). It is possible that this event has been
mis-transcribed into the i386 release notes as dropping
support for the 80386SX (the 80386SX reference was reworded in
src/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/hardware/i386/proc-i386.sgml
v1.12 on 2003.07.29) - I am unaware of any reason other than
(lack of) performance that would prevent FreeBSD running on an
80386SX/80387SX combination.
>How-To-Repeat:
Documentation and commit log inspection
>Fix:
1) Add links to Installation notes under "Current releases" in
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/index.html and install the
installation notes.
2) Update the comments regarding supported CPUs in section id="proc"
of src/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/hardware/i386/proc-i386.sgml
to indicate that an FPU is mandatory on the 386 and 486SX and
that the 386 requires a customised kernel.
3) Add comment regarding RAM to section id="proc" of
src/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/hardware/i386/proc-i386.sgml
along the lines of: "FreeBSD requires a minimum of 4MB to 8MB
to run, this can be increased substantially by application
requirements - a GUI desktop may need 200MB to run satisfactorily.
Installing FreeBSD via sysinstall requires a minimum of 16MB."
This would logically go just before the reference to PAE.
4) Update section 1.2 "Hardware Requirements" of
src/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/installation/common/install.sgml
along the lines of: "The standard FreeBSD installation requires a
486 or better processor and at least 16MB RAM. There is no support
for the 286 or FPU-less CPUs. The 386 requires a 387 NPX and a
customised kernel. The 486SX requires a 487 NPX. FreeBSD needs
a minimum of 4-8MB RAM on top of application requirements."
I will try and write the above as patches if I get the time.

I think it's a big step in the right direction. I don't really have any
suggestions, other than: go for it :-).

Hi gang,
I got these when visiting cvsweb.freebsd.org:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /cgi/cvsweb.cgi/.
Reason: Could not connect to remote machine: Connection refused
So what happend? Planned shutdown? In addition it seems that the maillist is
reproducing several outdated posts, are they related?
Thanks.

what's the matter? I think it is a message from reverse proxy of freebsd. btw, I have an internet ip and I didn't use any proxy.

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server...
hmm.. I think it might be a cgi-script related problem.

IMHO this should be closed because it's not a FreeBSD bug...
Maybe a server hardware problem, I think.

Grrr, sorry, squid is down because of not more disk space. I removed
some log files and restart squid.

No. I operate several Apache servers which does reverse proxying, and in my
knowledge this should happen when - the upstream server does RST in response
of a HTTP connection request. This is mostly caused by a failed start of
HTTP service.
I guess that the "upstream" server was restarted for some reason, and it
booted to multiuser correctly, however, for some unknown reason, the Web
service on that server did not started properly. Another possible cause
might be the service accidently or designedly shutted down.
Hope these services could be back again soon. It doesn't seem to be a
planned stop of service, maybe a hardware problem?
Cheers,
Xin LI

The traditional (old, non-mailman) access to the mailing lists via HTML seems to have chewed itself into oblivion. First it began spitting out
old mails then it quit being updated at all.
I wish there was a way to read the mailman archives in the same way the old HTML lists were made. It takes 10 clicks with Mailman to get to the archives. The old system was better there. The mailman interface does provide for more anti-spam anonymity, of course. So, if someone could simple hack a short cut here, we wouldn't need both systems and it'd be easier to use (for browsing, that is, which is how I stay informed without subscribing)
Sorry about the digression. Hope to see a solution soon. Perhaps I can help if it's just some cgi stuff.
>How-To-Repeat:
Simply access the old Mailing List Archives on the www.freebsd.org site and click on 'Browse' and then the current year link and pick your favorite list. You'll see they haven't updated in 3 days now except for some garbage on the 26th (old mails)
>Fix:
See what happened to the daily parsing script... perhaps it's just a disk capacity issue... no clue, sorry

The mailman access hasn't updated since Jan 26 either. I see three
postings on -www complaining about it, and I myself asked on -chat,
but I have not seen any response. This is important to many people,
and even if it can't be fixed soon, it would be nice if someone
would speak up to say, at a minimum, "yes we've noticed the problem."
Meanwhile, http://marc.theaimsgroup.com seems to have working archives,
and http://www.mail-archive.com archives some lists too.

I just queried "burncd" and then re-queried it with "closed reports too:"
set.
With "closed reports too" checked, it said there were no matching
reports, but there had been when I first checked. Since there are
open reports, I would expect that the collection of both {open,closed}
reports would not be empty.
Looks broken.

I need to chime-in here, too, please.
The older web interface provides one very important function than all other mail-archive sites I've seen so far:
When a 'commit' message comes through, we can click on the links for each file that has been changed, see the 'diff's for that file, and download them as a .gz file (thus keeping tabs etc. intact).
I don't know of any other mail-archive site that does this.
There have been times when I need such a diff in order to patch something and cannot wait for the CTM deltas (our political firewall won't let us use CVSup, and I need to track -Current for a port I've volunteered to maintain [net/tn3270]).
Being without this web interface is a bad thing: I'm screwed, I'm screwed right now, I've been screwed for most of this week, and I will continue to be screwed until this is fixed.
So please fix ASAP.
Please.

I know you're trying to help -- but --
That is not a MAIL ARCHIVE SITE!
I know full well about cvsweb.
Are you trying to suggest that I keep multiple browser windows running in order to cross-link 'commit' messages to the cvsweb site?
All by hand??
Where mistakes can happen???
Sometimes -- many times -- a single commit will consist of patches for a slew of files.
Using cvsweb I would need to manually select each level of a path way down finally to reach EACH file I'm needing to see what the diff is -- one-by-one at that.
Just get the regular mail-archive site working PLEASE!
It does what we've been needing and still need.
Look at other lists to see how many people have been complaining that it isn't working properly.
Ya don't know how much something like this is missed until it breaks.

I'm trying to suggest that you're not as screwed as you might feel.
That's all.

Why can't you, or someone else, say something about the problem --
what it is, what's being done, how long fixing it may take, or even a
simple acknowledgement that you recognise that a problem exists? This
total silence, despite multiple questions, only suggests "we don't
care, it's your problem if you depend on the mail archives." Is that
the message you want to send? This is not funny.
