I found a 2GB memory stick.

Unfortunately it did not make a difference - all of the following CD bootable 
systems froze at the ath initialisation:

a) 8.0 R i386
b) 8.1 R i386
c) 8.2 R i386
d) 9.0 Beta 2 amd64

I also tried with AHCI disable and the same result.
