intel3945 ahdemo/monitor mode error "ifconfig: create: bad value"

very very strange...

I put the atheros pcmcia in, I put in ahdemo mode...

I run airodump-ng wlan0.... I was returned to # prompt

however the card lights started blinking. Does this mean airodump isn't
working? In Linux it always showed realtime packet
capture. In this case, I just got kicked to bash shell again.
