How to debug a misbehaving usb device (DYMO LabelManager PC)?

Unfortunately, it seems that this isn't enought to get the device working in VirtualBox.
When I try to attach the device in VirtualBox, I just get this error message:
Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR)

The complete error message from the log in VirtualBox is:
00:09:19.619 ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) aIID={515e8e8d-f932-4d8e-9f32-79a52aead882} aComponent={Console} aText={Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR)}, preserve=false

To be sure that it isn't a problem with my configuration, I tested a few other usb devices with the same vm
- they all work.
Bummer.
