Xorg 7.4 and umass devices - a bad combination?

Just in case you haven't seen it yet...

 Apparently there have been issues on some hardware with the way xorg
(used to) probe the pci bus, see the `Unhappy Xorg upgrade' thread on
-stable, particularly:

(which details the fix.)
