Deprecating base system ftpd?

That’s a +1 here, both for the “keep it” and for the comment above regarding complete OS vs. kernel and a teeny userland.

Ideally, we’d modernize ftpd to support TLS.

The PITA with ports solutions is you immediate run into the issue of which of the many ftp daemons is going to fit your needs and not require some non-trivial amount of configuration. The stock ftpd ‘just works’ for local user accounts and has a simple method for blocking of swaths of users from using it if that sort of restriction is needed.

This reminds me of Apple removing the telnet client. Sure, most people don’t *need* telnet, but it’s handy to have, both as a simple test tool and as a way to get into old crufty network gear that never moved on to ssh.
