Deprecating base system ftpd?

I use FTP service too but pure-ftpd.
Also the only reason sometimes I use telnet is to check if SSH is open: "telnet server.example.com <http://server.example.com/> 22" but I can use "nc server.example.com <http://server.example.com/> 22"
