Thanks! In the end, I did a buildworld under 10.4, reboot into 11.2,
mergemaster -p, installworld, mergemaster, reboot. That all seemed to
work fine. Today, out of caution, I'll do another buildworld,
buildkernel, installkernel, reboot, mergemaster -p, installworld,
mergemaster, reboot before I take the really big step: upgrading to a
Ryzen processor and from 8GB memory to 32GB. Then I can worry about
ports. I might get brave enough to try poudriere again, though so far
portmaster has done the job for me.

I use rsync to propagate /usr/src and /usr/obj to my other machines
so that I can installkernel and installworld on them in single user
mode (hard to use NFS when booting in single user). -- George
