Does it work if you do:

% setenv MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX /usr/home/build/obj

>From man make.conf(5):

CAVEATS
     Note, that MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX and MAKEOBJDIR are environment variables and
     should not be set in make.conf or as command line arguments to make(1),
     but in make's environment.
