An update on how it went; I tested the drive in an old PC with the
Western Digital tool from the ultimate boot CD. The diagnostics produced
no errors.
A tip from Paul Mather pointed to problems with USB/firewire chipset,
the PL-3507, which was what I found in my enclosure. Most likely this is
the culprit. I'm going to buy a new enclosure.
