I think you have to specify full path for the device now... I ran in
to the same thing and it confused me for a bit...

[root at zaphod:~] smartctl -a /dev/ad0
smartctl version 5.33 [i386-portbld-freebsd6.0] Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
