Yes, I used the -Z option.

It is DVD-R media. IE: not re writeable, but write-once.
I haven't seen options to either of the tools, to specify a specific 
'writemode'.
The output of dvd+rw-mediainfo suggests it can at least identify it (output in 
previous email).

Since this is DVD-R (not RW) media, I thought it didn't have to be formatted 
in the first place, but - trying that, also doesn't work.

$ dvd+rw-format -blank /dev/cd0c
* DVD±RW format utility by <appro at fy.chalmers.se>, version 4.4.
- [mounted media doesn't appear to be DVD±RW]

I just wrote a test cd, using Nashua CD-R and cdrecord and all is fine. It 
burned at 16x speed, and I successfully mounted the cd, which makes me think 
it's not an atapicam/scsi issue but merely a 'way to detect the media 
format'.
