nvi dying with "Resource temporarily unavailable"

Zsh, actually.  Long live zsh! :-)

I suppose zsh could be interfering with the pty, but this failure happens
in the middle of an editing session, not at the start.  I assumed some sort
of race condition, but couldn't (easily) find anything in the nvi code.
