I have managed to get access to the machine with the problem hangups
described in my previous post
and have got the following error output:
kernel: pid 67648 (conftest), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
Kernel trap 12 with interrupts disabled
Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode cpuid = 1; apci id = 01
fault virtual address = 0x70
fault code = supervisor read, page not present

stack pointer = 0x10: 0xe7721b58
frame pointer = 0x10: 0xe7721b5c
code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xffffff, type 0x1b
= DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1
processor eflags = resume, IOPL = 0;
current process = 98905 (sed)
trap number = 12
panic: page fault
at line 819 in file /usr/src/sys/i386/i386/trap.c
cpuid =1;
I hope the above helps in tracking down the problem
