This should work, but has received very light testing. Are you loading 
ispfw or isp_2200? Can you send a boot -verbose output? And some more 
what hardware this is in details?

I suspect that the 2200 ROM f/w might have problems using DMA to load 
firmware. This is a not very well documented area of QLogic stuff and 
likely has a whole host of holes.
