Dell 1850/PERC 4e/Si (Megaraid) with "too many retries" error

The original post was a year ago, to the day, from when I suddenly
started seeing the msgs -- what a coincidence! The machine has been
running fine for years, there have been no changes to hardware or OS,
and these just started showing up in the log. I'm assuming it's a
hardware problem...
