The aac driver based adaptec controllers embedded in dell poweredge systems and
the 2200S standalone card work quite well (avoid 2120S, it has performance
issues)
HostRAID is software raid for the general public, it's completely inappropriate
for servers.

the cli is named aaccli and is downloadable on adaptec's website.
Although the controllers I've mentionned are known to work reliably (4 years
of production here on nearly 50 servers), they are showing their age (dell now
uses LSI chips, for instance) and recently adaptec has not been very cooperative
with the free software community for the support of their cards. That's why I've
moved to LSI MegaRAID (the fact that they are used in dell servers makes the chip
and its drivers more exposed, so bugs are found and fixed quickier than with less
popular controllers)
of course, this is just my personal opinion :)
