atapicam not recognizing devices in 4.9-RELEASE

I have a 4.9-RELEASE system which I'm trying to use a TDK 420N DVD+RW
burner with.  I've added atapicam to the kernel, but I don't see any
messages mapping the drive to a SCSI cd device, and camcontrol devlist
doesn't show it.

The machine has an IDE hard drive on the first IDE bus, and the IDE DVD
burner on the second IDE bus.  It also has an Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI card
for the real drives.

Any ideas? or further debugging paths?
