mylex X2000 - no raid disks

i have a mylex x2000 raid adapter that does some strange things under freebsd 4.8.

during boot, the mly driver initializes the adapter but no raid disks appear even though they exist and function normally in the controller software.

attempts to reboot the machine comes to a stop at:
mly0: flushing cache...

at which point the power button becomes useful.

anyone have a similar experience or suggestion?
