Not sure if your plan is for long term storage or not, but in the old
days, we used DVDs for archival backups which were notoriously lossy
(tar, split as well as rar with built in multi-vol support). Not sure
what USB sticks are like long term.  A handy tool we regularly used was
archives/par2cmdline to add some redundancy as well as checksums to the
files.   It saved me on a number of occasions.
