Can you please check _which_ graphics card your laptop contains?
Read through

	# pciconf -lv | less

If it's a Thinkpad, it's probably Intel. Depending on model and
age of the Thinkpad, as I said, it might be possible that you
don't need the DRM stuff at all.

Again, verify that you have the driver _for X_ installed, which
for Intel GPUs is xf86-video-intel. This to make sure that X is
not missing an essential component.
