This is something that's on core's agenda.  Last I heard they were 
asking for people to post their dmesg at NYCBUG's site:

https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi

However this was in reference to a change which I think has already been 
completed.  Also, being entirely voluntary as it is, this offers no 
guarantees about providing an unbiased sampling of the userbase nor does 
it give much of a handle on the absolute size of the userbase.
