Yes, but only when doing dot- or major-upgrades (11.1 to 11.2 or 10.x to 11 for example). 
Build a generic kernel and world (especially freebsd-update should be built ;)) and boot from it. Then issue a (iirc)

UNAME_r=11.1-RELEASE freebsd-update upgrade -r 11.2-RELEASE

That will then install a 11.2-Release over your 11.1-stable. I switched more than a dozen servers but on some I had to do some work on the loader.conf because I had a pretty minimal kernel before and the system didn’t boot anymore. 
And while you are at it, set up a poudriere and switch to pkg sourced from your local poudriere ;)
