That doesn't imply you have to run your own mail _server_.
You can construct a toolset to remotely manipulate the
messages stored at your registrar / provider and put that
on a virtual server (or a server of your own) to connect
to. See my previous message for which tools can be used.

You probably don't need a mail server.
