It isn't implausible, since even if the user's config should be
untouched, it's possible that the config is just used when starting the
session, while during the session some obscure cached file might be
used.

If the most likely locations shouldn't provide a manipulated and
actually used  backup of the original config, then happy Easter egg
hunt.

At least "displays.xml" seems to indicate, that the culprit seems not
to be a dconf absurdness, but you never know for a DE being in
transition from GTK2 to GTK3.
