Quickly and repeated adjusting system time

I have a program that fires events of at specific periodic (time of day,
day of month, etc.) events and I need to test it's ability to correctly
fire the events at the correct times. Thus I need a quick (and hopefully
programmatic) way to set the system clock to an arbitary time (no need to
mess with timezones). I know I can use date(1) but my gut says there has
to be better way... Ideas?
