As a newbye to bhyve, I went the sysutils/vm-bhyve route: it tries to 
simplify things and adds a load of documentation on its own wiki.

 From 11.x bhyve has its own VNC server and does not need X.

Start the VM and connect to it via VNC, I guess.
That's how it works with Windows, at least.

I've used VirtualBox in the past and I must say, at least at first 
glance, I like bhyve *MUCH* better.
