watchdog timeout

My 11.1 system keeps getting this group of messages

kernel: vge0: watchdog timeout
kernel: vge0: link state changed to down
kernel: vge0: link state changed to up

I swapped out the cable between the vge0 adapter and the ISP cable modem 
4 different times over this last month and it continues to happen.

What is this watchdog?

What are these messages really trying to tell me?
