LyX/TeX problem: can't find classes

Do you have the tex-formats package installed (as well as
texlive-texmf)? I had a similar problem to yours when getting LyX to
edit my Beamer files, even though beamer.cls seemed to be present. You
need tex-formats to be able to use pdflatex.
