You very much nailed it here.

My main concern is a 8-box cluster of firewalls for a platform that is
PCI-DSS compliant.

You may very well imagine how loath I am to install any additional software
on these boxes.
Hell we even had to remove 'screen' from them so, the less stuff, the
better.
